How do I Find a Basenji?
Let’s start with how not to find one. Pet shops, puppy farms and backyard breeders who are not affiliated with reputable basenji organizations are not good places to find a basenji. These dogs are carelessly bred and too often they are poorly cared for. Reputable breeders have a number of distinguishing practices.
What is a Reputable Breeder?
A good breeder will do the following:
Question potential puppy buyers in order to make sure the puppy is going to a home where he will be well cared for;
Usually require that pet puppies be spayed/neutered;
Participate with their basenjis in conformation, obedience, lure coursing, or agility events;
Conduct regular health testing of breeding stock and are happy to discuss health issues;
Want to be contacted if the buyer can no longer keep the puppy, at any time during the dog’s life.
If you are considering bringing a basenji into your home — and your life — visit breeders and owners, and get to know their basenjis. Take the time to learn all you can about this unique and loveable dog.
Breeder Referral
We are happy to refer people to reputable breeders in the New England area. It is important to note that the Bay State Basenji Club is not in the business of selling dogs and makes no guarantees regarding dogs sold by Club members.
The Bay State Basenji Club Breeder referral contact is: Andrew Sawler.
Rescue
Locally and nationally there is a network devoted to finding homes for basenjis who have been abandoned or given up by their owners.
Visit the Basenji Club of America website for information as well as a listing of the many excellent basenji rescue groups around the country.
